I enjoy reading blogs touting advice on how to grow to 1,000 users in 10 minutes. It’s satire. It’s comical, because in reality, there is no 10-step or 30-minute advice that can help a new startup grow its userbase and sustain that growth.
Instead of spending precious time reading these comedic pieces of literature, I’ve decided to test, test, and test some more. There’s beauty in using real results to make real decisions on how to grow your business. We’ve tested partnerships with venues. We’ve tested ad-purchases on all relevant social media sites (too expensive). We’ve tested street teams and email marketing. All of this testing leads us to the most cost-effective solution for OUR business. Testing must never commence, because what works today might become expensive and prove ineffective tomorrow as your target audience and technology evolves.
Moral: Never let a world renowned marketer, journalist, or entrepreneur tell you how to grow your business when you are the best source of answers. The challenge will always be if you are prepared and willing to put in the work to become the expert you are expected to be.
